Art of Democracy

Until the 1950's the United States practiced little or no public support for the arts. This was a unique situation among powerful nations of the Western world. With the escalation of the Cold War and the rise of definitive styles of American art, the U.S. government gradually supported the arts and utilizing art for diplomacy. Following more than a decade of private efforts, the Art in Embassies Program was founded in 1963.
